Author Tips: The 12 Step Business Author’s Facebook Page Cheat Sheet

Facebook logoKeep hearing about marketing your book on Facebook, but don’t know the difference between a Profile, Page, or Group? Here’s a quick primer on Facebook book promotion.

  1. Create personal Facebook profile and fill out your profile with some basic information. Comb through your personal settings carefully. Remember that everything defaults to public, and some people can and will take advantage of you.
  2. “Friend” 20 people you know personally and “like” five brands–gurus or leaders in your field, media outlets you follow regularly, or companies you respect. Try a few status updates, photo uploads, or comments and see what reactions you get.
  3. Check Facebook daily for updates to get an understanding of how the system operates. Never spend more than five minutes on the site. This is meant to be a quick in-and-out interaction. After a couple weeks, you can really get started with promoting your book.
  4. Create a brand page for you, your book, or the main idea that Facebook users can “like” and receive updates from this page in their news feed. We recommend you do it for you, the author, in case you write a second book or your idea gets confused with something else (see Shut Up, I’m Talking). Fill out the page information as completely as possible and upload photo.
  5. Post one new thing each day for seven days. You need to acclimatize yourself a bit before you get the word out.
  6. Notify your friends and colleagues of the new page over email, Twitter, your personal Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. to get the ball rolling. Integrate links to your Facebook page across your web presence with badges. Have you put your website, blog, Twitter account, and Facebook page in your email signature yet?
  7. Create a brand page update schedule. Never update more than once a day, never less than once a week. If you update too often, people will block or unfollow you. Likewise, update too infrequently and they will forget you. Sign up for a Hootsuite account to schedule updates ahead of time. Test the best time of day to update. Maybe you get more reactions in the morning or over the weekend.
  8. Make your updates balanced. For example, one in five updates will be a video, one in five updates will be a picture, two in five updates will promote me/my book, three in five updates will share resources relevant to my audience. If you sell too hard, you turn people off. If you demonstrate you’re a useful resource, people will stay hungry for your content. Install the Hootlet plug-in for your browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome) and use the Hootlet button to schedule the updates when you find relevant content across the web.
  9. Monitor your brand page feedback. Check for comments or likes at the end of every day and respond to people as appropriate. Once every couple months, ask for feedback from your “fans” on what you’re doing and what they like and don’t like. Monitor your growth or decline with Facebook’s weekly page reports.
  10. Build a Facebook marketing resource list. Check out free Facebook marketing resources from Facebook itself, read blogs like AllFacebook, or (shock, horror for an author) buy a book like The Facebook Era by Clara Shih.
  11. Getting desperate? Try a few Facebook advertisements. Set a low monthly budget and target the friends of your current fans with interesting copy and images. Remember: What can you offer them?
  12. Ease off the daily Facebook fix to every-other-day. Everyone hates a Facebook addict (sometimes referred to as a super-user).
